Gregorio Allegri (b. Rome, 1582; d. Rome, 1652)

Allegri received his early musical training as a boy chorister and later as a tenor at S Luigi dei Francesi in Rome. He also served as a singer and composer at the cathedrals of Fermo and Tivoli and as maestro di cappella of Santo Spirito in Sassia. He joined the papal choir as an alto and was elected its maestro di cappella in 1650. Allegri's fame stems from the extraordinary popularity of his Miserere, written for the papal choir to sing during the Tenebrae Offices of Holy Week. Starting around 1666, the Miserere was performed annually by the papal choir, for which its use was exclusively reserved.
