Johann Christoph Altnickol (b. Berna bei Seidenburg, Oberlausitz, 1719; d. Naumburg, 1759)

Very few works by German organist and composer Johann Christoph Altnickol have survived, and he is remembered primarily for his long association with J.S. Bach. He began assisting Bach, primarily as a bass in the Thomasschule choir, while studying theology at Leipzig. Altnickol's appointments both at Niederwiesa, and at St. Wenzel, Naumburg resulted largely from Bach's recommendation. In 1749, Altnickol married Bach's daughter Elisabeth, and the couple took in Bach's developmentally disabled son Gottfried Heinrich after Bach's death in 1750.
