David Cutforth
(b. 1923, London) David Cutforth was educated at Rugby School and subsequently at Cambridge University, where he obtained a First Class degree in music and a degree in natural sciences. He later attended the Royal Academy of Music in London, studying conducting, piano, and organ. He attended master classes in conducting at Siena and Salzburg, the latter under Antal Dorati. From 1954 until 1969 Cutforth was the head of music at Maidstone (Kent) Grammar School. During his tenure he directed the Maidstone Symphony Orchestra and founded the Maidstone Opera Group. From 1970 until his retirement in 1985 he held the post Principal Lecturer at Colchester (Essex) School of Music. Cutforth has three children. His elder son Nicholas, an associate professor at the University of Denver (Colorado), helped us obtain this biography. |
