Alfred Whitehead
(b. 1887, Peterborough, England; d. 1974, Amherst, Nova Scotia) Alfred Whitehead was a composer, organist, choirmaster, and teacher. He began his musical studies in England, then moved to Canada in 1912. He became the first Fellow of the Canadian Guild (College) of Organists, received a Bachelor of Music degree from the University of Toronto, and earned a Doctor of Music degree from McGill University. Whitehead was organist-choirmaster at churches in Truro, Nova Scotia, and in Quebec and Montreal. He soon emerged as the acknowledged leader of Protestant church music in Montreal. His compositions were primarily motets and anthems (in 1963 he wrote to a friend that "there are entirely too many Whitehead church works"), as well as numerous works for organ. His music is noteworthy for its rich, tonal harmonies and intricate counterpoint. After his health began to fail, he returned to Nova Scotia, where he served as organist-choirmaster at Trinity St. Stephen Church from 1953 to 1971 In addition to his musical gifts, he was also a noted painter, and his works hang in various private collections. |
