Jan Dismas Zelenka (b. Lounovice, Bohemia, 1679; d. 1745) Following his early education under the direction of his father, the local organist, Jan Dismas Zelenka studied at the Prague Jesuit College. In the year 1723 the coronation of Emporor Charles IV took place in Prague. Zelenka’s close connection with the Jesuits allowed him the opportunity to compose the music for the festive state event. Dignitaries from all surrounding territories attended, bringing their orchestras and choirs to perform. Zelenka conducted his own composition, and the solo parts were sung by Czech noblemen. Shortly afterward, he received the royal title of Church Music Composer. Zelenka spent the remainder of his life in Dresden, where he was admired by Bach and Telemann. |
