Third grade students from Polaris at Ebert paint to "Full Fathom Five" View a slideshow of images from this Paint to Music project. This autumn St. Martin's Chamber Choir joined forces with the Denver Public Schools' Polaris at Ebert school to explore the relationship between performed music and the visual arts. Charles Wood's "Full Fathom Five" was played for the third grade class, and they learned about both the musical and historical elements of the work and about how to translate their aural perceptions into visual art. Their project was to produce sailboats, where the boats illustrated the abstract expression of the colors and shapes that the music inspired, and the sails reflected the mathematical extension concepts of artists like Jasper Johns. The students' art was imaginatively displayed at St. Martin's October concerts, where the choir performed "Full Fathom Five". Students and their parents and teachers were invited to attend the concerts to hear the work sung live, and to see their boats on display. The choir and audience were delighted at the results. Many thanks go to the faculty and administration of Polaris at Ebert for making this project possible, and special congratulations to the students for their enthusiasm and creative efforts.
