Steve Hahn

Steve Hahn plays four instruments—the Chapman Stick®, trumpet, bass, and guitar—and is proficient in classical, jazz, rock, and fusion styles. He has performed in scores of venues including Carnegie Hall, New York City; Royal Albert Hall, London, England; and the John F. Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts, the White House, and Constitution Hall, Washington, D.C. He performed in fourteen countries onboard the HMV Royal Princess and has played at the Volksfest in Berlin, Germany.

In 1989 Hahn began to study a relatively new instrument, the Chapman Stick. He has studied with the instrument’s inventor, Emmett Chapman, and with other renowned Stick artists. Hahn wrote and arranged compositions for the Chapman Stick and trumpet for his first CD, Stickburst. His second CD, Native American Music Meets The Chapman Stick, features music of five Native American tribes transcribed by Hahn for Chapman Stick and percussion. Hahn's third CD, sh, contains original jazz compositions for Chapman Stick, trumpet, and percussion. The CDs have been played on more than 100 radio stations across the United States. Hahn has also contributed to the CDs Tappistry, Vol. 1, an international collection of works by Chapman Stick players, and Giant Tracks, a tribute to Gentle Giant. Several of his compositions have been published.

In 1994 Hahn was one of just twelve musicians in the United States to receive a Jazz Fellowship–Individual Project Grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA), which allowed him to study the Stick with world-renowned Stick/bass player Alphonso Johnson. This award was the only NEA grant ever given to a Chapman Stick player. He has received other grants from county and regional government sources.

Hahn has presented several clinics and workshops in the Boulder-Denver area, including the annual Colorado Stick Seminar, which attracts Stick players from the region and beyond. In November 2005 he played on the Colorado Art Rock Society’s Progressive Music Festival at Quixote’s in Denver.
