St. John's Episcopal Cathedral

St. Martin's Chamber Choir has performed in several spaces in Denver's St. John's Episcopal Cathedral.  The main Cathedral nave, a magnificent Gothic space, is ideal for a cappella performances.  Dagwell Hall is used for more informal occasions such as the Feast of St. Martin.  The intimate setting of St. Martin's chapel was the location of the choir's first performance in 1994, and was the inspiration for the group's name.  The choir celebrated their five-year anniversary with a gala concert in St. Martin's Chapel on June 11, 1999, five years to the day after that first modest offering.

St. John's Cathedral had its beginnings in the very early days of Denver.  The frontier church was named St. John’s Church in the Wilderness, and was founded in 1860 in Denver City, which had itself been settled barely a year before.  The nearest Episcopal church was 700 miles away, so the name seemed appropriate to early settlers.

In 1879, St. John’s was designated seat of the bishop, and in 1881 the first cathedral was built at 20th and Welton Streets. The cathedral burned to the ground on May 13, 1903, probably at the hands of an arsonist. Work began later that year on acquiring a new site for the cathedral, and the first service was celebrated in the present cathedral on November 5, 1911.

St. John's Cathedral is located at 14th Ave. and Washington St., in the Capitol Hill neighborhood of Denver, Colorado. (please see location map)     [St. John's Episcopal Cathedral website]
