St. Martin's Chamber Choir

2011-12 Concert Season

I. Songs of Farewell - A Nation Reflects

Hubert Parry’s poignant Songs of Farewell form the basis of this concert marking the 10th anniversary of the terrorist attacks that changed our world. Written during the final year of Parry’s life as a conscious reflection on the transitory nature of existence, they make a powerful statement. Other works by Eric Whitacre, Terry Schlenker, William Schuman and other American composers.

II. Brahms' Liebeslieder Waltzes
(Cameo Concert *)

A quartet of singers accompanied by duo-pianists render these delightful, jewel-like miniatures. In this performance, the waltzes themselves will be interspersed with readings of the texts, rendered in such a way as to highlight the rustic and often doggerel nature of the poetry Brahms chose. Come prepared to laugh and be surprised!   [Concert Program]

III. Bach's Christmas Oratorio
with the Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra

St. Martin's Chamber Choir and Pro Musica Colorado Chamber Orchestra join forces for two performances of J.S. Bach’s Christmas Oratorio, which has not been heard in its complete version in the Denver/Boulder region for nearly two decades. These two fine ensembles collaborate for the first time to perform the complete Oratorio.

The Christmas Oratorio is to the German-speaking world what Handel’s Messiah is to the English-speaking world – the most beloved of all classical Christmas works. It tells the entire Christmas story, from the Angels and the Shepherds to the Magi, in a succession of beautiful melodies that only a master craftsman like Bach could weave.
